How to use
What it does
DES is the older 56-bit block cipher; Triple DES (3DES) runs it three times for stronger security. Both use a 64-bit block and an 8-byte IV. Although not recommended for new systems, they still appear in banking and legacy protocols. This tool supports DES and 3DES in CBC/ECB, all in your browser.
Example
Pick DES, key 12345678 (8 bytes), IV abcdefgh (8 bytes), plaintext Hello, AES!, mode CBC, padding Pkcs7, output Base64:
6YzqbupLKgMxim4IYL/JKw==Switch to Triple DES and the key must become 16 or 24 bytes, e.g. 123456789012345678901234.
Compatibility notes
- DES uses an 8-byte key; 3DES uses 16 or 24 bytes.
- The IV is 8 bytes and only needed for CBC.
- Both ends must share the same algorithm, mode, padding, key and IV.
FAQ
Q1.Is DES still safe?
DES with its 56-bit key can be brute-forced and should no longer protect sensitive data — only legacy interop. For new work use AES or SM4; if 3DES is required, prefer a 24-byte key.
Q2.What key lengths do DES and 3DES use?
DES is fixed at 8 bytes. Triple DES accepts 16 or 24 bytes; 24 is strongest while 16 has a known Meet-in-the-Middle weakness.
Q3.Why do I get garbage after decrypting?
Usually the algorithm, mode, padding, key or IV differ between the two ends. Check each field, especially the DES vs 3DES key length.
Q4.Is my data uploaded?
No. Encryption runs in JavaScript inside your browser; the tool works offline and the key stays on your device.
